Intraspecific competition in common coastal dune grasses overshadows facilitation on the dune face

چکیده

Restoration of degraded dunes through revegetation native dune building species is critical to preserve multiple ecosystem services (i.e., coastal protection, habitat). As exhibit high levels abiotic stress, it likely that facilitative interactions among plants occur, reducing stress caused by harsh conditions, and benefiting restoration efforts. The research was determine how plant spatial arrangement (clumped vs. dispersed) at the slope affects growth two dominant grasses along United States Atlantic coast, Ammophila breviligulata (American beachgrass) Uniola paniculata (sea oats). We determined local distribution density each field surveys inform a manipulative study planting assess survival under different arrangements. Planting did not influence U. paniculata, but dispersed plantings had positive effect on parameters (height, stem number, ramet number), compared clumped arrangement. No A. survived end second season, regardless Clumped arrangements improve or over growing seasons studied; thus, creating may be necessary for However, observing natural patterns using this information guide beneficial as climate change impact results due increased stress. Further focusing biotic locations will contribute planning.

Trampling Effects on Coastal Dune

Long-term human trampling on coastal dune vegetation was analysed using eight 100 × 100m study areas ranging in trampling intensity JJ'om little or no past trampling pressure to severe trampling pressure. All trampling levels significantly reduced species diversity. Total vegetation cover was significantly reduced only in areas with severe and heavy trampling pressure. Where long-term moderate ...

Biophysical feedback mediates effects of invasive grasses on coastal dune shape.

Vegetation at the aquatic-terrestrial interface can alter landscape features through its growth and interactions with sediment and fluids. Even similar species may impart different effects due to variation in their interactions and feedbacks with the environment. Consequently, replacement of one engineering species by another can cause significant change in the physical environment. Here we inv...

A Field Experiment for Coastal Dune Reconstruction

Coastal dunes, as a whole, represent a natural barrier between the sea and the land, playing a vital role in the coastal defense against the waves and tides. Compared to the use of hard, man-made structures, not only is it a less expensive method to counteract the coastal erosion problems, but it is also a method that has higher ecological and scenic values in the environmental management aspec...

Genesis of coastal dune fields with vegetation

Vegetation greatly affects the formation and dynamics of dune fields in coastal areas. In the present work, we use dune modelling in order to investigate the genesis and early development stages of costal dune fields in the presence of vegetation. The model, which consists of a set of coupled equations for the turbulent wind field over the landscape, the saltation flux and the growth of vegetat...

Process-based Modeling of Coastal Dune Development

A model that predicts sediment transport due to wind action can be valuable addition to hydrodynamic models to describe the long-term interaction between land and water. This thesis presents the application of an aeolian transport model [Sauermann et al., 2001, Kroy et al., 2002] as a tool for the evolution of coastal nourishments and dunes. The model was originally developed to describe import...
